The Contempt-o-tron

IMAGE: spEak You're bRanes

The Blarxists have been falling over themselves to cheer the development of the twat-o-tron, a piece of code that 'simulates' blog comments.

The site hosting the comment generator, spEak You're bRanes (yes, really) has been making fun of comments posted on the BBC website's Have Your Say blog for over a year.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that - indeed the dry humour of the site's commentary on some of the excerpts it showcases can be rather funny.

The comments generated by the 'twat-o-tron' combine xenophobic rants with attacks on 'political correctness' and the 'nanny state' and criticism of environmentalism. Hence, my discomfort with the praise being lavished on this. It not only brands holders of a wide range of viewpoints "twats", it implicity equates anti-authoritarians and people uncomfortable with environmentalists' agenda with BNP supporters. It seems the Blarxists don't see the problem with this.

As regular readers of Question That will have noticed, I can't stand the nanny state, particularly when the nannying is imposed by the EU. I think political correctness (though I prefer Fabian Tassano's alternative 'ideological correctness', the former having become conflated with xenophobia) is at best unfortunate and at worst Orwellian, and have a deep suspicion of the motives of many environmentalists. I am, however, a long way from being a BNP supporter. The Blarxists, like the people responsible for the 'twat-o-tron', don't differentiate - You're either with them or against them.

Blarxists like Paulie, Will and Peter Ryley display unabashed contempt for the people addressing contrary opinions to their own. This has been observed several times before, and is showing no sign of abating. In today's post, Paulie links the 'twat-o-tron' to Roger Thornhill's (currently dormant) blog, associating one of the most prominent libertarian bloggers with Speak You're Branes' computer-generated ranting. It seems Paulie really can't tell the difference. And, I'm glad to say, this idiocy is surely going to be the downfall of his ilk.

Because, like it or not, the comments on Have Your Say, Comment is Free etc are not written by computer code*, they are written by real people who have a vote in elections. The left are, as has been much lamented in the likes of the Guardian, seen as out of touch with ordinary people. Recent performances at the ballot box by the parties of the socialist left have been, frankly, pathetic.

Could there be a connection between this contempt shown by left-wing bloggers for the voter, and said poor performances?

* Well, apart from the comments that wags are copy-pasting in from the 'twat-o-tron', that is!

You've missed the point.

Climate change advocates/deniers aren't funny. Racism isn't funny. Warmongering isn't funny.

People warbling incoherently about "tree-hugging environMENTALISTS", "crypto-communist climate-facists" and "muslims stole my wheelie bin" is what's funny.

If you find yourself agreeing with these people, it doesn't make you wrong. It should maybe worry you a little though :)

Nelson: Thanks for the response, but I think you've missed the point of my post.

The complaint isn't that your blog isn't funny. It is. It's that there is no distinction made between far-right racism/xenophobia and libertarian positions, such as opposition to excessive authoritarianism and scepticism of the EU. I consider this to be harmful, hence the post.

This one, for instance. There's nothing comedic about this, OK the grammar's not great, but it's a perfectly reasonable libertarian argument that you happen to be prejudiced against.

I do not have to go through why this applies to a greater degree to the output of the 'twat-o-tron', because I made that point clearly in the original post.

Paulie and Will: Your wit is remarkable!

I've no problem with the anti-authoritarian stance that HYSers come up with. Indeed, questioning government intentions is entirely benificial and it's quite refreshing to see non-apathetic members of the public.

Simply what makes HYS so funny is their inability to actually engage in coherent debate, without slagging off things that are "diffrunt" or resorting to name-calling and insults. In that sense, the twat-o-tron isn't having a laugh at people questioning the guvmint, but rather is doing so at those whose points are solely weakly constructed rants on their fears.

ian_qt: My editorial policy ("Post comments that you find amusing") isn't going to change. Some of them might be people that you agree with. Hey ho.

With regards to libertarianism and the particular post you linked to, I find the idea of someone pleading for "more liberal advertising" both amusing and depressing. Perhaps I have a different idea to you of what constitutes liberty (mine starts with "free" but doesn't end with "market").

ps. Close the borders, abolish tax, nu-liar bore out etc

I think this post can be summed up as follows 'I don't like it when he takes the piss out of people I agree with.
Please carry on mocking people whose opinions I disagree with however'.

Someone needs to add 'Blarxist' to the Twat-O-Tron as soon as possible.

You couldn't make it up!

Gay muslims steal my wheelie bin whilst idle Lib Dems sit by an re-edit nursery rhymes, and all you're bothered about is whether you can follow the thread of anonymous commentors!

Talk about the nanny state gone mad. Hrumphh!

The bottom line is that HYS shows what the average British person thinks (if the word will stretch that far) and that when anonymous, they are generally mean, selfish, self-pitying, aggresive and ignorant.

I don't care how liberal you are; reading the comments on the Daily Mail Website or HYS is a shattering earthquake to the any educated person's view of modern humanity. Yes, they have the right to speak blah blah but that does not mean we have to sit quietly.

EG... People whose grasp of Global Warming theory is so absurd that they think it states 'the whole world gonna get warmer and drier all over. End of'. In other words, they clearly haven't read the first thing about it, BUT STILL they have the front to scoff at the entire scientific community's opinion. Not disagree... scoff high-handedly.

The 20th century gave the abused silent masses a voice, but not an education. Their anti-intellectual over-simplistic certainties could hurl us all into hell. Post modern democracy gave us George Bush and the resurgence of repackaged Neo-Nazism.

We have a right to utterly humiliate loud stupid political comments.

'Blarxist' is a ludicrous word. I can't think of two political poles that are further apart.

Try reading marx and see if any of that even vaguely correlates with "NEW" labour policy.

QT said...

Yes, I know "blarxist" is a ludicrous word. All you need to know is that it is a response to "bloggertarian". It doesn't bear further analysis!

One could of course develop a "Prat-o-Tron" to simulate Paulie and friends .... need to get a gibberish dictionary from somewhere, though.
